2nd year in the making and once again hosted by the Canyon Club Resort Marina! In 2016 the tournament was pretty tough to get off the ground for the first year. With back to back weekends of overwhelming wind and sea conditions participation was low but interest was excitingly high. Still a few brave anglers set sail the morning of and held their own, knowing the fish were there. After a long night at sea, the target species of Bigeye and Yellowfin tuna were all brought back to the scales. Even a Mako and plenty of Mahi were weighed in as well. It just goes to show that the timing was right, even though the weather did not cooperate that night.
So for 2017 we are making it CAPTAINS’ CHOICE! Now you can choose to depart on Friday the 23rd into Saturday the 24th, OR Saturday the 24th into Sunday the 25th. No weather committee. The Canyon Club Overnight Tuna Tournament is still a trolling, chunking, or jigging tournament and you will have a full 24 hours on the water! Early season tuna fishing has continued to be a growing reason for getting out on the water and into the canyons. As we have seen in previous years the fish were there and 2016 proved it for our event.
As encouraged in our first year, we welcome all anglers to join in. With a low entry fee and variety of calcuttas to choose from, one of these nights on the fishing grounds could be very rewarding. Whether you want to specifically target Bigeye or would rather wander inside the 100 fathom line for a stringer of Yellowfin, the cash payout could be equally worthwhile. Don’t forget whatever else you can drum up throughout the night or day because Mako, Swordfish, and Mahi also offer an opportunity to weigh in for some big bucks!
The Captains’ Meeting will be the morning on day one of the tournament. We will be serving a continental breakfast for our participants. Weigh in will be held on day two for those who took the first night shift and day three for anglers looking for a Saturday night at sea. Sunday night will conclude the tournament with a poolside dinner served with a side of awards. We look forward to taking this event to the next level in 2017. With Mother Nature’s cooperation, this year we’ll be certain to shatter the record our first year’s participation and overall purse!
