With an uncertain forecast for the next few days, we have decided to extended to fishing days for the Mid-Atlantic Tuna Tournament to include Sunday. By adding a day to the end of the event we are making the tournament format Captains Choice 2 of 4. Boats will now get to declare TWO lay days and TWO fish days, Thursday to Sunday. Those who wish to fish on the original schedule still can, and use Sunday as a lay day.
Because of scheduling, the tournament dinner will still take place as scheduled on Saturday night, with a brief awards ceremony on Sunday after the weigh-in concludes.
Pre-registered participants, informed of the change, have been very supportive of the decision.

Our Early Bird Entry Discount normally ends on July 1st, but it’s been extended to July 15th to better help us plan. That’s right, pay your entry fee (just the entry fee, calcuttas can be paid later) before July 15th ($750) and save 75$. After July 15th it’s $825. 100% refunds are available if you have to cancel as long as it is done prior to the Captains Meeting.
Sound like a good deal? You bet it is!

“The tuna bite in our canyons is the best it has been in years! We’re even catching some white marlin and dolphin on the tuna troll. It’s truly outstanding!”
Charlie Langan,
Charter Fishing Coordinator,
South Jersey Marina.
The 10th Annual Mid-Atlantic Tuna Tournament. July 20-23, 2011
Thanks to the nice, warm water that came in early this year (and ruined our shark fishing!), the tuna fishing has been outstanding! The fishing reports have been fantastic and there’s every indication it’s going to be that way for awhile. If you like catching tuna, and who doesn’t, this event is for you! And if you didn’t get to feed your competitive spirit during shark season, this is a similar opportunity to compete, win some money, and have a great time.
Here’s the rundown…
By popular demand to make the event more competitive and lucrative for the participants,
the Mid-Atlantic Tuna Tournament has been switched to a trolling only format as of last
year. Recognizing the changes in our tuna fishery, this new format was well received and
ultimately makes the event more exciting and competitive than ever before. As always, you
still get to fish 2 of 3 days, captain’s choice, for yellowfin and/or bluefin.
What’s great about this tournament is that boats of all sizes can compete at several different
financial levels and have a great sporting experience. But remember, the more you’re
in, the more you win! All of the calcuttas have been restructured and we’ve even added an
exciting team aspect to the event called Team Play.
Plus we’ll have our always enjoyable Captain’s Meeting (with open bar and other good eats) and an outstanding awards dinner and celebration. All in traditional South Jersey Tournament style with a seafood buffet provided by the world famous Lobster House Restaurant, an open bar and live entertainment!)
We hope you’ll consider joining us and take part in one of South Jersey’s premier events. It’s going to be a lot of fun!
Hope to see you at the weigh station,
Bob Glover, Tournament Director

The 22nd Annual Viking/Ocean Showdown kicks off on Wednesday, July 13th at the beautiful Canyon Club Resort Marina and officially ushers in the start of the billfishing season here in Cape May. This year, the Ocean Yachts Fishing Team will be tasked with winning back the crown for Weekstown, while the Viking Team will be trying to make it two for two.

Bizarre. That is the only way to describe the water temperatures during our 31st Annual Shark Tournament last week. “In my 26 years of running this event, I can’t remember warm water like that” said Tournament Director, Bob Glover. “We run this event in the same time frame every year and we’re usually right on the meat. All of that warm water swirling around out there certainly confused things, especially the fish!
Participants did manage to catch some Makos, but the Threshers and Blues that we always get were elusive.”
At the Captains Meeting, participants enjoyed complimentary wings courtesy of Gregg Coffey and his C-View Inn and plenty of cold beer courtesy of Joe Canals Liquor Store in Rio Grande.
Anglers hopes were high going into day one despite the warm water and everyone left the dock excited. At the end of the day, only two Makos qualified and would end up holding first and second going into day two. A third place fish hit the scale on Saturday and all three would end up with a paycheck later that night at the awards.
“Overall, I think everyone had a good time despite the abnormal temperatures” said Glover. There were some Blue and Brown shark releases and several largeTigers let go, but it certainly would have been a heck of a lot more fun if the water was at it’s normal temp for this time of year. At least we’ll have some good tuna fishing in the next couple of weeks!”
Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all of the anglers and sponsors who participated!

The Annual South Jersey Shark Tournament is the first competitive big-game fishing opportunity of the season. Averaging 185 to 200 boats each year, this event is the premiere Shark Tournament in the Mid-Atlantic region. With a cast of over 1,000 anglers participating annually, this exciting event takes place when the bite has been historically at its best in our productive waters off of Cape May. Our shark tournament is structured to provide participants with the best possible fishing hours, lucrative cash prizes and an equal chance for boats of all sizes to compete – all while setting an example of sportsmanship and sound conservation practices. The entry fee is $545 per boat which provides eligibility for tournament prizes and five tickets to all dockside dinners and festivities (additional tickets can be purchased at the Captains meeting).

It is said that “great minds think alike” and in this case, I’ll go with that. Apparently there was a date conflict with our 10th Annual Mid-Atlantic Tuna Tournament and the Ocean City (MD) Tuna Tournament. It’s an odd year calendar-wise, and a shift of a day or two can throw off normal schedules by up to a week. After discussing this with our good friends down at the Ocean City Fishing Center and Sunset Marina, we agreed to move our tuna event to July 20 – 23, 2011. So, please adjust your calendars accordingly and make your plans to join us a week later than initially scheduled. Same revised format as last year, same schedule, same great fishing, same dockside fun!
In addition, The 22nd Annual Viking/Ocean Showdown will now move to July 13 – 17, 2011 to stay in tune with other events. This was done as the Showdown historically coincides with the OCMD Tuna Tournament. Again, same schedule, same great fun, etc.
Hope this hasn’t caused any inconvenience,
See you there!
